Krainer Sausage is traditionally smoked over beech wood and prepared according to the original recipe of the old Gavrilović masters. It has a unique and fine texture and stays soft and savoury after boiling. The world famous Krainer was named by the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph in 1801 when he was travelling through the province of Carniola. A country tavern owner humbly offered him his home-made sausages which had no particular name. Delighted with the new flavour, the emperor named it Krainer Wurst, Krainer sausage, after the province. On Christmas 2006, Krainer sausages had the honour of being part of the breakfast menu in space.
